Why do us expats buy properties on the Costa del Sol?

Buying a property is always a big decision, and buying a property abroad is an even bigger one. So why do so many people decide to leave their home comforts and decide to start hunting for Costa del Sol properties? This may be because of the 320 days of sun a year, or the numerous entertainment options available, the laid-back lifestyle, abundance of good schools, health services and improving infrastructure... It depends on the person! But here are just a few reasons why people may look to re-locate to the sunny southern Spanish coast.

First of all, it is much easier to enjoy life when the sun is shining and the days are long. Seasonal Affective Disorder is a real problem for those of us who hail from the northern-most European countries, so many British, Dutch and Scandinavian people have come to us looking for property for sale on the Costa del Sol - it tends to be more affordable than property where they come from, so many decide that instead of sinking their hard-earned cash into holiday rentals, they can invest in properties for sale in Estepona, Fuengirola or Marbella. Plus, with so many expats with the same idea, you won’t be alone out here.

One thing that will strike you as you cruise down the A7 which snakes along the Costa del Sol, is the sheer quantity of restaurants, shops, bars, clubs, chiringuitos and general entertainment establishments there are in such a short stretch of road. There’s no excuse for being bored in a place where there are so many opportunities for fun, where life is cheap and the people are cheerful. If you’re a golf aficionado, this will certainly be the place for you, as it is called by some the “Costa del Golf”. The quantity, quality and variety of courses will astound you. You should definitely look into golf course developments if you do enjoy golf, as you will often get discounted green fees and free club membership if you buy a property on these developments.

One of the commonly cited pitfalls of this area of Spain is its infrastructure, which traditionally has let a lot to be desired. While this may have been true in the past, the recent tourism boom has brought top international schools, state of the art health infrastructures and many options that make life easier for an expat living on the Costa del Sol. There are few places that are not clean and well-maintained. Of course, with such a massive influx of yearly tourists, there are areas where you should keep a close eye on your wallet, but this should come as no surprise. The many benefits one obtains from moving to the sunny south certainly outweigh the downsides.

Buying or selling property is life-changing. We get that, so we pride ourselves on our personal, supportive and professional service.
